virgin mary gns book swap update

Picture
Well done to everyone who took part in the Virgin Mary GNS Readathon!!

Even though the Readathon is now over, we are going to keep the Book Swap going on Thursdays until the holidays. We are doing this because so many girls told us how much they loved reading new books every week.

More beautiful FREE books will still be available for all the girls this Thursday (June 4th) at the school between 10am and 11am.

You can return the books you got last week and swap them for new ones or, if you haven't taken any books at all yet, come down and get a selection. it's never too late to get involved.

Please note that strict social distancing will be in operation at all times.

This Thursday,June 4th

water safety

Now that we’re coming into the warm summer weather, lots of us like to head towards the swimming pool and the beach. It is so important that we stay safe on and near the water. PAWS is a primary education program for teaching children about water safety. When you click on the link below you will be brought directly to the website, which will display different class levels (just click on the senior infants one)  You will see four lessons which can be completed at your own pace. And when the children have completed the lessons, they will be a ‘PAWS hero’ and can apply for a  PAWS certificate on the website which will be sent to them.

The link below will bring you to the book we read also called 'Under the Sea'. From the book choose one animal and write a small report about it using the template in the pictures (write 3-4 facts and draw a picture) Remember: A report is made up of facts only and should not include opinions like 'i think'.

'ou’ words: how many words do you know with the sound ' ou' in them? Some words I know with the sound ‘ou’ are ‘out’, ‘mouth’ and ‘shout’ Do you know any ‘ou’ words? Click on the links below to practice the song and see how many ‘ou’ words you can find.

Maths:
When we put crisps into a bowl we can put a lot in, or sometimes we only put a small amount in. If we fill it right to the top until we can’t fit anymore, then our bowl is ‘full’. But if we have a bowl with no crisps in it, our bowl is ‘empty’. Have a look on the activity in your Busy at Maths book on Pg 115. Can you find the items that are full? Colour them in red. Now find the items that are empty and colour them in blue.

Top tips for reading

Picture
Good morning everyone and welcome back to our Virgin Mary GNS Readathon!!
Well done to everyone that has taken part so far. It is wonderful to see so much reading being done.
Remember, it's never too late to get involved so if you didn't take part last week, you can still take part this week!

My top tips today are for the girls. These are 10 things you can do when you get stuck/run into difficulty in your reading. Give them a go the next time that happens to you!

1. Re-read what you just read. (Read it again) Don't just keep reading if you don't understand what you have just read.

2. Read out loud. Say the words out loud.

3. Use context clues. A fancy way of saying use the rest of the sentence to figure out what the word is,or the meaning of the word.

4. Look up the meaning of a word if you don't know it. Use a dictionary if you have one or use Google!!

5.Ask questions. Ask yourself questions such as 'What did that just say?'

6. Think about what you've already read. Put together what you just read with what you've already read.

7. Make connections. I posted about this comprehension (understanding) strategy last week. Think about what you already know. Can you connect what you are reading know with that.

8. Slow down. Don't rush it. Understanding what you're r3ading can sometimes take time.

9. Think about the author's purpose. What is the author trying to tell you?

10. Pay attention to what you're thinking. Don't ignore your thoughts as you read.

I hope you find these useful in your reading this week. Keep your videos coming to ClassDojo, or WhatsApp them to the school phone on 0852455457!

Happy Readathon!

active home week 2020

Picture
It's 'Active Home Week'. Time to have lots of fun and do lots of fun physical activities like sports, exercises, games and challenges. I have posted a chart in the post below of different activities to try throughout the week. Each day there will be lots of fun activities, challenges and dances for you to do. Why not post a photo or clip of yourself doing your favourite activity or challenge to your class dojo portfolio. Be safe and have fun!
Picture
This grid is filled with 25 different physical activities/challenges to undertake for 'Active Home Week'. Do 3-5 activities each day from the grid, trying different ones each time. How many can you do? Feel free to post photographs or clips of yourself (in your class dojo portfolio) undertaking your favourite challenges. I can't wait to see them. Have fun!

data

Picture
We're recording more data today. On page 101 of your 'busy at maths' book, we're counting the number of cats and dogs. Remember to always use the instructions at the top of your page to help you. For every 1 dog we colour 1 box brown. For every 1 cat, we colour 1 box grey (or use your pencil if you don't have grey)
I can see 8 dogs so i'm going to colour 8 boxes brown.
How many cats do you see, and so how many boxes will you colour grey? I cant wait to see your fantastic work.

We need a favour!

Picture
Super Senior Infants. I wanted to ask your help with something. I know how Super you are at writing notes and messages. As we all have to stay at home to stay safe, many elderly people living in Nursing Homes are very lonely because they have nobody to come and visit them. I was wondering if you could help cheer them up by writing a little note for them. Im sure your family at home would help you to write it. Even just a couple of sentences, or as much as you like. I know it would make them so happy. This note will be put into a gift bag for each resident and sent to them. If you're going to write a note/message please send me a picture of it, so it can be sent off to the Nursing Home for the residents. I really hope you can help us. And remember...don't forget to use your 'Super Sentence Potion'. Use your capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and keep your letters neat and tidy and on the line. Thank you so much for your help Senior Infants.

shake your sillies out!

Picture
I know how much Senior Infants love this song. It's one of our favourite songs to sing and dance to. Can you remember how to 'Shake your sillies out?'. Show mammies and daddies how good you are at dancing to this song. Feel free to post a clip of yourself singing and dancing to the song if you wish. Have fun!

new words - 'Starlight'

Picture
Super Senior infants are so good at reading their words that i have another two new ones for them.

The first one is 'WHICH'.
example: Which book would you like to read?
Can you put the word 'which' into a sentence?

The second word is 'BUY'.
example: I would like to buy a bag of sweets
Can you put the word 'buy' into a sentence?

As always in section (A) we write the words across for practice. Find and circle the words in section (B). Fill in the missing word in section (C) and write our own sentence using the words in section (D). Now practice these words on page 57 of your skills book. Please feel free to share a photo of your work in your class dojo portfolio.

Active home week 2020

Normally at this time of year we would celebrate 'Active Schools Week'. But due to current restrictions in place, we will celebrate 'Active Home Week' instead. We can still do lots of fun physical activities, but from our homes. Here's Tom again with another fun fitness video filled with lots of our favourite activities. If you wish, you can share a photo or video clip of yourself doing your favourite physical activity for 'Active Home week' on our class dojo page. Don't forget to wear your leggings and runners. busy at maths: 'data'

The new topic in our Maths that we will be learning about is 'Data'. Data allows us to count and record information about a specific topic. In our busy at maths books on page 101, we will be gathering data (or information) about ladybirds and butterflies. Can you count and record how many of each there are? Are there more butterflies or more ladybirds? Can you gather and record the data to find out?

Handwriting practice

Picture
It is very important that we keep practicing our writing everyday to help us improve and make our writing nice and neat. In your purple free-writing copy, or on any piece of paper you have, you may do your 'free-writing'. Remember that free-writing is exactly that...you are free to write or draw about anything or any topic you like. Maybe you might like to write lists, letters, messages, notes, postcards, stories, or even draw an illustration or picture. It's up to you. Don't forget to keep practicing a page every day or two in your handwriting book too. I would love to see a picture of your fantastic work. PS: Don't forget to use the Senior Infants 'Super sentence potion'. ;-)

Read! read! read!

Picture
Remember to practice our sounds, jolly phonics songs, tricky words, word boxes and reading everyday if we can. These are all so very important to help us get really good at reading. Teachers will be so impressed that girls in Senior infants can read the really big and tricky words. Below is a variety of activities to help you practice. Have fun!

tricky words challenge

Picture
TRICKY WORDS CHALLENGE
One of our favourite games to play in school is the 'tricky words challenge'. There are two teams, the Senior infants team and the Teacher/Sinead team. The girls have to write down a tricky word and hold it up for me to see. If they spell it correctly they get a point. If they spell it incorrectly, then the Teacher/Sinead team gets the point. The team with the most points at the end wins. Senior infants are always winning but i think the Teacher/Sinead team are going to win today. Shall we see?
For your Tricky Word Challenge Senior infants, write down ten tricky words by yourself. Post them to your portfolio, and we can see how many points you get in total when we add them all up together. Good luck!

What time is it?

Picture
Do you remember we learned all about telling the time? 1 o clock, 2 o clock, 3 o clock and so on? Remember the clock has a big hand and a small hand. When the big hand points to 12 it shows an 'o clock' time. The small hand determines the full time eg: It is 1 o clock if the small hand points to 1 and the big hand points to 12. It is 3 o clock if the small hand points to 3 and the big hand points to 12. Can you guess the time in the clock above?
Now try pages 97 and 98 (as above) in your maths book for practice.

New words

We have two new words to learn today.
The first one is 'WANT'.
example: I want to go to the park.
Can you put the word 'want' in a sentence?

The second word is 'OUR'.

welcome back

Picture
A big hello and welcome back to all my Super Senior Infants. I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and got lots of lovely surprises from the Easter Bunny. What did you do to enjoy your Easter? Maybe you could draw me a picture to show me, or if you prefer you could write a 'recount' telling me what you did, or write about it in your copy with the title 'My News'. I cant wait to hear all about it.

tips for practicing mental maths at home

Teaching/learning maths at home can be tricky for parents and children. This document explains some basic but very important strategies which can be used to help children develop their mental maths skills. Practice and repetition of the same thing in different ways is key. Start small on one set of numbers (1-10) until these have been mastered, before moving on to different ranges (1-20, 1-30, etc).

Covid-19 closure: online learning

Dear Parents/guardians
I hope that you are all keeping well and safe and that the children are enjoying any activities/work given, but also balancing work with time to engage in physical activities, getting fresh air, playing to develop their interests and lots of reading and story time. I am sure you and the children are missing school and the routine as much as I am.
Attached below are links to online resources.  Both CJ Fallon and Folens publishers (which we use here in the school) have allowed free access to parents for the duration of this COVID-19 closure.  I will keep you informed of any updates as they come. In the meantime keep well and stay safe.

Google www.folensonline.ie  (for Abair liom -Irish and Starlight -English) and www.CJFallon.ie (Busy at Maths-Maths) for details.
